What Is Apexification? 

When an undeveloped tooth (or one that has suffered dental trauma) is infected and unable to heal, apexification is a procedure that places a barrier to close off an open apex. The apex is monitored over several months with calcium hydroxide added to the root canal system. This not only removes the infection but also stimulates calcification and helps to create and seal the barrier at the tooth’s root. 

The procedure itself involves cleaning out the root canals and getting rid of infection and debris. Unhealthy pulp is removed at this time, too. Once that is done, the tip is sealed with a barrier to allow it to heal. 

Apexifcations usually have a very high success rate with a positive impact on oral health.
